Introduction

Community Based Rehabilitation Service (CBRS), established in 1995 is a non profit making social organization working for and with disabled people, their families and the community. It is well established and known in the disability and community development sectors in Nepal. It has been working for rehabilitation as well as for promoting a self reliant and dignified life of children and young adults with disability through sustainable livelihood, inclusive education, lobbying and advocacy, and social inclusion.

CBRS regards disability as a social issue and is process orientated, with a focus on empowerment and rights. We provide rehabilitation services and assistive devices, as well as increasing opportunities for education and income generation. We work within the community to promote attitude change and increase knowledge about disability, training other organizations in this philosophy. We refer clients to other organizations when necessary.

CBRS activities promote participation and inclusion aiming to create an inclusive society through the empowerment of disabled people where they enjoy equal rights and social benefits. We have been adopting the Rights Based Approach (RBA) in designing and implementing programs to strengthened social integration.

Through training, CBRS also works at a national level to promote the inclusion of disabled people within the activities of community development organizations, which is a right, based approach and uses the social model of disability.
